Abstract
Objective: College students encounter daily stressors (e.g., academic overload, and interpersonal issues) but are lack adaptive coping to handle these challenges, resulting in their helplessness and compromised mental health. While meaning-making serves as a coping strategy to help individuals make sense of the stressor and facilitate adjustment, it remains unknown whether this strategy could be used to promote adjustment among college students. Therefore, we sought to develop and test the effectiveness of a meaning-oriented intervention on the mental health of college students.
Methods: Using a single group experimental study, 20 students completed three sessions of intervention targeting to enhance their meaning-making coping and three assessments of pre-test, post-test, and follow-up. The Friedman test was used to analyse the differences across three assessments.
Results: Compared with the pre-test, we found significant improvements in students’ meaning-making and meaning-made as well as depressive symptoms, resilience, and post-traumatic growth, at the post-test and follow-up.
Conclusions: This study provides preliminary evidence for the effectiveness of a meaning-oriented intervention and lays a foundation for further research. Facilitation of the process of meaning-making among college students may help promote their adaptation to stressors in daily life.
