Abstract

Power supply for monitoring sensors on freight trains is a big challenge in the railway system. It is urgent to find a low-cost and convenient supply source to power on-vehicle sensors. This paper proposes a magnetic field-based energy harvester (EH) to power the micro-power sensors for condition monitoring at the bottom of the freight car. The proposed EH system uses the magnetic field introduced by the rail track current, which can provide a continuous and stable source for sensors in the moving condition. Firstly, the basic principle and the basic model of the proposed EH system are analyzed. The key parameters to design the EH system are classified and discussed, such as winding number, wire diameter, and core diameter. Secondly, the finite element simulation tool analyzes the influence of eddy current and magnetic field distribution caused by the metal object under the vehicle. The saturation limitation of the magnetic core is also considered to guide system design. Finally, an experimental setup is conducted and a receiver coil with 1000 turns is fabricated at a distance of 80mm above the rail. The upper limit of the output power of the coil under the steel plate is 0.48 W. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.
