N2 - This paper reports liquid optical tip in a microchannel is controlled by the flow rates of three laminar flows. Unlike the solid optical tip, liquid optical tip provides good optical interfaces, which can be controlled dynamically. In the design of the optofluidic chip, the core and the cladding flow streams of the liquid waveguide is formed using calcium chloride (CaCl 2) and deionized water, respectively. The diffusion of CaCl 2 between the microfluidic laminar flows establishes a gradient refractive index distribution to form the optical tip. Based on the results, the optical intensity at the tip is increased by 15 times. © 2009 CBMS.
