A hybrid wireless tracking method based on electromagnetic tracking and IMU

Abstract

This paper proposes a hybrid 6-DoF wireless tracking method that fuses a 6-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU) with electromagnetic tracking (EMT). The IMU resolves orientation ambiguities caused by the lack of phase reference in wireless EMT, while the EMT compensates for long-term IMU drift, effectively replacing the role of the magnetometer. The experiment validates the effectiveness of the proposed method. The system achieves a position error of 2.38 ± 1.36 mm and an orientation error of 3.4± 1.6 °. A tunable update rate of 1-50 Hz enables a trade-off between accuracy and power consumption, ranging from 8.1 mW to 109.7 mW. © 2025 IEEE.
