Abstract

A hybrid scheme, which combines the advantages of the finite element method and experimental technique, has been developed for vibration studies on plates and beams. Experimental technique is initially used to determine experimentally the first few frequencies of the structure, leading to the determination of equivalent spring constants, and thereby avoiding the assumption of infinite rigidity at the boundaries. The spring constants are then incorporated into a finite element code to determine the higher mode shapes and natural frequencies. It is found that greater accuracy is achieved in the hybrid method when compared with the theoretical data. © 1989.
