Abstract
This paper presents, to the best of our knowledge, the very first attempt in automatically determining the gains of a fuzzy PID controller. The approach is a heuristic one. The closed-loop or open-loop response of the plant to a unit-step input change is first observed, and then relevant parameters are determined from these responses. The fuzzy PID controller gains are then determined from an appropriate combination of these parameters, which gives an equation that can be used to find the controller gains. Computer simulations are provided to demonstrate the feasibility of this approach for tuning the fuzzy PID controller. In addition, a fuzzy PID controller that is used to control a DC motor is tuned by the methods presented here.
