Abstract

We present here a new traffic model for a B-ISDN statistical multiplexer where the net input process forms a stationary ergodic Gaussian discrete-time process. Such a model is general and is closed under superposition. We present a queueing analysis of a queue fed by this traffic model which leads to explicit, approximate formulae for the mean and the distribution of the unfinished work. The formula is in terms of three parameters of the net input process: the mean, the variance and the autocovariance sum. This provides a solid theoretical basis for traffic characterization by these parameters. Simulation results demonstrate that the formula is accurate.
