Abstract

This paper presents a novel framework design of a distributed traffic information system (DTIS), which aims to help drivers to identify traffic condition based on global positioning system (GPS) signal and vehicle to vehicle (V2V) communication. A historical traffic information database (HTID) is added to the traditional design of DTIS. The differences between current traffic information and historical traffic information are utilized to improve the V2V communication efficiency, system accuracy, and system robustness. A simple smoothing method is also proposed to dynamically update the HTID, which enables it to reflect the traffic demand changes. Simulation is used to verify the potential benefit of the proposed method.
