Abstract

This paper introduces a dual-band dual-mode button antenna for body centric communications. Integrated on the clothes, the proposed antenna has a miniaturized flexible ground. By employing PIFA and its higher order mode, an omnidirectional pattern and a broad-side directional pattern for on-body and off-body communications are realized at lower and upper bands, respectively. With a flexible ground, this design obtains a robust reflection coefficient against the bending effect of the clothes on human body. When bending on a cylindrical phantom, the button antenna still exhibits the dual-mode characteristic. Owning to the good performance such as miniaturized dimension, dual-mode pattern and flexible ground, the proposed design is a practical candidate for Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) applications.
