Abstract

This paper outlines two issues that Confucian scholars need to elaborate on concerning reproductive technologies’ ethical issues. The first is about the foundation of Confucian virtue ethics. The paper clarifies that Confucian virtue principles and rules are not utilitarian; neither represents the subjectivist value of personal autonomy. Instead, they are embedded in the deep structure of the universe and the ritual practice of humans, as Confucian sages disclose in the Confucian classics. The second issue is about the Confucian attitude towards the distinction between therapy and enhancement with reproduction and PGD/PGS. The paper argues that Confucians should sort out different types of PGD/PGS and different types of enhancement and bring them to the test of relevant Confucian values. It concludes that Confucians can accept some types of PGD/PGS and enhancement but must reject others. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2021
