Abstract

3D printing has revolutionized various manufacturing processes and is increasingly being utilized to develop different membrane technology aspects, such as fabricating novel feed spacers for enhanced hydrodynamic performance. It is also finding new applications in the fabrication and modification of polymeric and ceramic membranes to overcome the limitations of existing fabrication processes such as phase inversion and sintering. The development of different membrane module components by 3D printing is an exciting avenue for unprecedented customization and process optimization. This chapter discusses the application of 3D printing in feed spacers, membranes, and modules. A discussion on future prospects and potential challenges is also provided, which will be helpful for water professionals in considering the many possibilities of additive manufacturing in membrane applications. © 2023 Elsevier Inc.
