Abstract
DIARIES: DRY RAIN
Video diary... window view from my home from that year... Typhoon (hurricane) signal no. 8 was up -- no school, no work. I "write" with my video camera as a habit. On the spot. Like automatic writing. Or free writing, The original footage was one long take, which I reconstructed to study how montage preserves a differend kind of here and now. (Part of this diary later on became the raw material for another work 'Non-place, Other Space' (2009)
NO PATH BUT MY FOOTPRINTS
...Memories, desires, histories and footprints of travels... leave nothing but visually textured traces of impermanence... Originally titled 'Floor Drama 2S' (2010), NO PATH was made for floor projection. The full version 'Floor Dram 2' (30 minutes long) contains images from my personal video diaries and image archive started many years ago. This "2S" version is one accidental stroll in Seville, Spain. As I often did, I wrote my thoughts with my camera on.
DOORS MEDLEY:
A montage game, DOORS MEDLEY is a re-mix of two existing works of mine – DOOR GAME (2005, 26m) and DOOR GAMES WINDOW FRAMES (2012, 11m30s), which explores visual mannerisms and formulaic structures of film melodrama of the 1960s in Hong Kong. DOORS MEDLEY highlights specifically gender paradigms embedded in popular culture. From anthropology’s viewpoint, we have created drama and we also reenacted the drama we create. Popular cultural texts fine-tune specific course of events with narrative logic, which we fervently imitate to act out our daily roles. Isolated narrative fragments, as they are subject to free combination, reveal their hidden predispositions.
