3-D-Printed Widebeam Circularly Polarized Dielectric Resonator Antenna With Planar Feed

Abstract

A compact circularly polarized (CP) dielectric resonator (DR) antenna (DRA) with wide gain and axial-ratio (AR) beamwidths is designed with a microstrip planar feed. It deploys a parasitic metal ring to broaden the gain beamwidth. For the AR beamwidth, a T-shaped microstrip feedline is introduced to manipulate the phase of the radiated fields and generate good CP fields. To verify the idea, a prototype was fabricated and measured, with reasonable agreement between measured and simulated results. The measured results show a record-high overlapping half-power and AR beamwidth of 154°, surpassing the previous record of 150°, which was held by existing work with a vertical feed. © 2002-2011 IEEE.
