Abstract

Georgia’s superior access to land and sea transport makes it a natural transit hub between the global East and West. To promote its economic development, Georgia strongly prioritises its transport sectors. The improvement of transport infrastructure brings investment to the cities involved, furthering their development. This research, using case studies, investigates the urban development of the port town of Anaklia and the capital city Tbilisi on both urban and architectural scales through the lens of Belt-and-Road Initiative (B&R). Two major transit infrastructure projects – the Deep Sea Port and the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars Railway - are highlighted and analysed by a proposed 4-phase study model. This research aims to provide critical insights into urban prosperity and decay and their connection with the development of transit projects. The research also provides a study of the B&R from a spatial viewpoint. Its findings are expected to enrich the English-language literature on transport infrastructure and urban development in the Transcaucasia.
