Abstract
This paper starts with the analysis of the motivations of compiling ESP textbooks for higher vocational nursing majors, including the compilation of the current higher vocational nursing English textbooks, the ESP teaching and learning, the results of needs analysis based on Hutchinson and Waters’ model and the present higher vocational education policies. Then, it introduces the content arrangement and the features of Practical English for Nurses Listening and Speaking, elaborates the student-centered, listening & speaking-oriented, action-focused compiling principles with the formative assessment. It also points out the problems in the compilation and gives some suggestions for the improvement.
