Abstract

Through a comprehensive survey of the transformation of public housing in Hong Kong since 1960 s and the challenges faced by this hyperdensity city, with reference to relevant experiences of Singapore and Japan, this paper discusses the role of Hong Kong public housing program and its significance in coping with population explosion and the goal of sustainable urban development. This paper aims to provide referable and exemplary strategies for high-density and ultra-density cities that are currently seeking transitional strategies for the development of housing and living environment, so as to promote efficient and orderly implementation of planning, design and policy-making in the process of hyperdensity urbanization.
