Abstract
Based on an analysis of the composition, scale, spatial form, organization and operation of the five subway stations and their catchment areas on the Hong Kong Tung Chung Line, a concept of development ratio was proposed to indicate the density, effectiveness and efficiency of a subway station catchment area. The ratio provides a useful and direct indicator for the comparison of different stations, cities and development modes. The paper discusses the design factors related to density and diversity of a station catchment area. This research supplements the existing TOD study by highlighting the density problem and looking into its relevant design and planning issues.
