Abstract

This study investigates the production and perception of the Mandarin sibilant consonants [s ts tsh], [ʂ tʂ tʂh] and [ɕ tɕ tɕh] by eight Cantonese-speaking students in Hong Kong. Results of acoustic analysis of the noise energy of the sibiliants show that both the Mandarin sibilants [s ts tsh] and [ɕ tɕ tɕh] uttered by Cantonese speakers are similar to the Cantonese sibilants [s ts tsh]. The finding indicates the first language's interference in the pronunciation of the second language. Furthermore, the perceptual assessment performed by ten native Mandarin speakers shows that there is confusion among the pronunciations of the three sets of Mandarin sibilants in the speech of Cantonese speakers, resulting in the lowering of the rate of correct pronunciation. In perception, the Cantonese speakers are able to distinguish the three sets of Mandarin sibilants, an indication that there is a difference in the abilities of production and perception in second language acquisition. The findings in this study provide some fresh implications for the acquisition of the Mandarin sibilants by Cantonese speakers.
