Abstract

Hong Kong, being one of the global filmmaking centers and the second movie export center in the world, produced about 300 films a year at its peak. With the original soundtrack in Cantonese (the de facto official spoken dialect of the Chinese in Hong Kong) and subtitles in written Chinese for the Chinese-speaking markets and English for overseas markets, it brings out problems for subtitles translators. This paper, using Twins Mission - a Hong Kong martial arts-action-comedy film as a case study, attempts to look into the challenges of subtitles translation from Chinese to English regarding the linguistic and cultural issues with special attention to the use of Cantonese and cultural terms related to social customs, beliefs, values, and vulgar and slangy expressions in the film.
