    Abstract

Governance is an essential concept of the neoliberal policy discourse and academic knowledge over the last two decades. This article examines this political-intellectual configuration in the context of transitional China. Adopting an interpretative approach, it explores the rise of governance as a key term in the political knowledge about reformed China and how it has shaped the theoretical perspectives on the Chinese transitional state. It argues that the Chinese version of governance is a particular theoretical device to articulate the neoliberal turn in social policy. The paper then traces the historical development of the concept in Chinese political thoughts in order to show its adaptive process to become an integral part of the dominant policy discourse. Finally, it concludes with an evaluation of the hegemonic structure that underlies this intellectual establishment.
