Abstract

This paper discusses similarities and differences between Yuen Ren Chao and Roman Jakobson in doing linguistics, with their correspondences as supporting evidence. While Jakobson displayed a stronger inclination of theorization in fields such as phonology, child language, and morphology, Chao appeared to be more data-oriented. In dialectology, however, Chao was more active in establishing general principles. With regard to interdisciplinary approaches and the relation between form and meaning, the two scholars shared similar views.
