Abstract
According to the theory of conceptual metaphors, the cognitive process of metaphor is accomplished by mapping from source domain to target domain. However, the basis of the mapping process has rarely been probed into. It is stated in the paper that the way of metaphorical mapping is based on iconicity, whose degree even further influences the extension of metaphor. To verify the hypothesis, this study compares the distributions of war metaphors in two self-built corpora, respectively the reports of Premier League football matches and those of Ebola. As a result, the degree of iconicity is far higher in the target domain of sport competition than that of disease-resistance domain, which in turn generalizes more application of war metaphors in the target domain of sport competition than that of disease resistance.
