Abstract
Wang Niansun( 王念孙 1744—1832) and his son Wang Yinzhi( 王引之 1766—1834) were both eminent scholars in the Qing Dynasty( 1644-1912). Their expertise in philology enabled them to read the classics with unprecedented insights. Their findings accumulated in the Jingyi Shuwen( 经义述闻),though widely influential, were not free from errors in semantic, etymological and syntactic analyses. This article argues that some of their commentaries on Shijing are highly suspect and problematic. Six examples will be discussed in detail and it is hoped that the questions raised in this article will form the basis for further investigation.
