Abstract
This article focuses on the exceptions to the requirement of informed consent in medical treatment. It first discusses the legal policy of the rule of exception, and then analyses in detail the four scenarios of exception, viz. the emergency exception, therapeutic privilege, waiver of the right to informed consent and compulsory treatment. Finally the article briefly reviews the legal liability that may be imposed upon health care professionals when they apply the rule of exception.
