Abstract
Zhang Taiyan's profound scholarship and his expertise in Zuo's Commentary on the Spring and Autumn Annals (《左傳》) made his work, Chunqiu Zuozhuan Du (《春秋左傳讀》), widely recognized as one of the most important studies on Zuo's Commentary on the Spring and Autumn Annals in modern China. His insights and meticulous research enabled him to put forward many new ideas that scholars in the past had never thought of. These ideas are often of tremendous value in helping us to understand the original work. However, sometimes he was too confident of himself and his interpretations were too far-fetched at times. It is a pity that this important work by Zhang is rarely studied in great detail by scholars. Thus, the present article is written with the aim of pointing out the merits and deficiencies of Zhang's book through representative examples.
