Abstract

Originated from the West, Sha Fei styled “Modern Girl” appeared in Chinese modern literature in the late 1920s. Bold and unrestrained in love, they practice the awakening of self-consciousness, and shoulder the depression of the times. They are mirror images of Emma in Madame Bovary, in their rebellious personalities, love experiences, and in their exquisitely detailed psychological activities. Since the rebellious characteristics of Sha Fei styled “Modern Girl” were extremely pioneering at that time, The Diary of Miss Sha Fei received extensive attention, discussion and imitation once it was published.
