Abstract
This paper adopts the conversation analytical approach to describe the functions of the Putonghua expression ＂jiushi（就是）＂ （including ＂jiushishuo＂ （就是说）） in naturally-occurring talk-in-interaction. It is illustrated that the range of the functions of ＂jiushi（就是）＂ in conversations as identified indicates semantic changes and grammaticalization of the word.
