Abstract
Achieving the “dual carbon” goal and promoting common prosperity are two major strategic priorities for China. As energy is a fundamental resource for production and consumption, it is important to understand whether the alleviation of energy poverty can effectively promote the common prosperity among rural population. This paper uses rural household samples from the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) conducted by Peking University. By constructing a regression model with a recentered influence functions and using the instrumental variable approach, it examines the impact of energy poverty alleviation on common prosperity from two perspectives: income growth and the reduction of income inequality. The results show that energy poverty alleviation significantly increases rural household income levels and reduces income inequality. Specifically, when the proportion of households lifted out of energy poverty increases by 10%, the average annual income of rural households is expected to rise by 5,543.69 yuan, which is equivalent to 14.72% of the average annual income. Meanwhile, the average Gini coefficient of rural households decreases by 0.008, representing a 1.91% reduction in income inequality. The income growth induced by energy poverty alleviation is pro-poor, with its effects mainly benefiting low-income groups and wage income. Moreover, it promotes upward mobility in household income status while suppressing downward mobility.
