Abstract

The Heroes' Assembly (Qunyinghui), emerging alongside the Model Worker Movement in Yan’an during the 1940s, played a pivotal role in shaping various aspects of life in the Liberated Areas. While previous scholarship has examined its impact on economic production and political dynamics within the base areas, this paper reveals its substantial effect on cultural activities.
First, the Heroes' Assembly effectively mobilized large numbers of intellectuals, offering them a cost-effective and practical means to engage with rural realities. Second, it fostered a unique mechanism for text production that departed from traditional "author-centered literature," and, through the large-scale circulation of documents, created a symbolic space centered on the deeds of Heroes. Thirdly, as a "Sitz im Leben," the Heroes' Assembly transformed literary production, publication forms, and even poetic structures. Finally, it advanced the development of a people-oriented publishing system, acting as a foundational institution for realizing Yan’an’s new cultural vision.
