Abstract

Starting from the nostalgia for traditional movie theater in digital age, my paper explores the differences of cinematic perception between tradition viewing in movie theater and digital viewing through electronic devices. Through the particular lens of Barthes, my paper demonstrates how the major justifications for movie theater proposed by nostalgists like Dargis, Sontag, Bellour, and Aumont are untenable and even detrimental. More significantly, I have presented that with the transfer of time control promised by digital viewing, a kind of liberated spectatorship has emerged from the historical horizon. Barthes, by his discourses on movie theater, obtuse meaning, still, etc., had amazingly captured the fact that the future of the filmic lies precisely in the control of time, both projection and narration. In the state of heterochronic viewing and media convergence, cinematic spectatorship opens its possibility to the erotic, affective, and aesthetized world in an unprecedented degree.
