Abstract
In both Chinese and Western civilizations, “gender dichotomy” has been a historical issue. In recent years, with the development of the Internet and the awakening of women' s consciousness, the public opinion on “gender dichotomy” on social media has gradually shown characteristics of extremism. The “Pangmao” incident, due to its far and profound impact, has become one of the
representative events of “gender dichotomy” on Weibo. In the dissemination of the incident, the audience' s selective cognition, the construction of a simulated environment on social media, and the virus-like transmission of Internet information have intensified the social media environment, resulting in the emergence of public opinion concerning “gender dichotomy”. The mainstream media in China should prioritize safeguarding national cybersecurity by establishing a more comprehensive online public opinion monitoring system for early warning and responding, thereby upholding public order and morality, and fostering a clean and healthy online environment.
