Abstract
The development process, characteristics and engineering applications of physical vapor deposition (PVD) techniques were summarized. The main R&D works carried out by Advanced Coatings Applied Research Laboratory (ACARL) of City University of Hong Kong for development and application of PVD hard coatings in current decade were introduced, such as the development of diamond and nanocomposite coatings for Hong Kong manufacturing industries, the integrity and reliability of super-hard nanocomposite coatings, as well as the industrialization and application of a novel large-area coating technology based on pulsed magnetron sputtering.
