Abstract
The high-temperature sulfidation of AISI 310 stainless steel coated with Al-7 wt% Si (without or with preoxidation treatment) film was studied over the temperature range 700 - 900°C at 10-2 - 10-1 atm sulfur vapor. The Al-Si coating was prepared by hot dipping. The corrosion kinetics followed the parabolic rate law, and the sulfidation rate constants increased with increasing temperature and sulfur pressure in all cases. The scales formed on 310 stainless steel coated with an Al-Si layer consisted of mostly aluminum sulfide (Al2S3) and minor amounts of iron sulfide (FeS/Fe1-xS), chromium sulfides (Cr2S3/Cr3S4), and (Fe,Ni)9S8. The oxides formed on 310 stainless steel coated with an Al-Si layer with preoxidation treatment consisted of mostly α-Al2O3, and minor amounts of SiO2 and Al2SiO5. While the scales formed on the alloys without preoxidation treatment consisted of Al2S3 and minor amounts of FeS/Fe1-xS, Cr2S3/Cr3S4, and (Fe,Ni)9S8. The formation of the continuous layers of α-Al2O3 and Al2S3 was responsible for the reduction of sulfidation rates, and it appeared that α-Al2O3 was the best sulfidation-resistant phase among all scales present.
