    Abstract

Between 1928 and 1937,the Nationalist Government intended to reconstruct Nanjing into a modern capital that could match international examples like Paris,London, and Washington.A major component for the reconstruction project was the creation of a Parisian-like boulevard called Zhongshan Road for the parade of the casket of the late Sun Yat-sen.Since then, the boulevard has become the most prominent public space in Nanjing.By tracing the transnational references in boulevard design, this paper explores the political meaning behind Zhongshan Road.It illustrates the ways the State used public spaces to project national power and to achieve the goal of nation building.
