Abstract
This study introduces a frame-based, morpho-constructional approach to sense distinction and categorization. It combines frame semantics and constructional grammar for the analysis of verbal semantics. It is proposed that verb meanings are anchored in semantic frames, which can be defined with frame-specific roles in constructional patterns. While verbs and constructions are both form-meaning pairing constructs, they are mutually feeding and complementing as in a Gestalt relation. The approach can be effectively and systematically applied to the investigation of frame-specific subclasses, verb-specific polysemous distinctions, and finer differentiation of near-synonymous sets. It may also be used in cross-linguistic comparisons of verb frames and constructional schemes. Case studies from Chinese emotion verbs and caused-motion verbs are provided as illustrations of how the proposed approach can facilitate a linguistically-motivated analysis of verbal semantics.
