Abstract

Heritage conservation has been a discipline and accumulated practice for decades in China. However, the heritage of the People’s Republic of China is a newly emerging topic. This article briefly reviews the social and architectural development of the People’s Republic of China in the past 70 years, commenting on the criteria and the list of ‘Chinese architectural heritage in the 20th century’. Moreover, it discusses the problems in modern architectural conservation, suggesting that foreign architects’ design in China and China’s overseas construction-aid projects should be considered in the heritage list. Examples of modern architecture conservation in Shenzhen and Shanghai are discussed, and examples and debates on modern architecture conservation in Hong Kong in the past decades are referred to enrich the experience for modern architectural conservation and reuse.
