    Abstract

Ideophones are particularly abundant and have clear gralnmatical functions in the Yue dialect spoken in Nanning (NNY), which usually appear as reduplicated suffixes of adjectives, verbs or verbal phrases. In this paper, we argue that the peculiarities of the ideophones in NNY were partly transferred from the surrounding Tai-Kadai languages. In light of comparisons between the ideophones of NNY and those of Tal-Kadal, we attempt to reconstruct the path of development of the former, and point out its implications to the studies of language contact.
