奥姆斯特德的思想渊源及其设计理念: 对三个关键词的检视

Frederick Law Olmsted is well known as “the father of modern American landscape architecture”, while his glory as a prominent social critic is obscured, which makes us ignore the connection between the two and the intellectual discussion that this connection points to. This paper begins from the exploration of how the puritan spirit and New England Transcendentalism etc. became important component of Olmsted’s intellectual foundation, and analyzes three keywords “civilization” “community” “taste” frequently appeared in his writing with cases of South Park in Chicago, Suburban Village of Riverside in Chicago and Franklin Park in Boston, thus explaining the relationship between those keywords and his design practice. In this way, Olmsted’s landscape planning and design ideas are integrated into the history of American thought in the 19th century, and the relationship between design and thought are also constructed from the perspective of historical research.
