Abstract
Discussions on local study and local history has drawn the attention of the academic circles in recent years, with many research perspectives coming up. For example, the “Fūdo (climate and culture)” theory proposed by the Japanese philosopher Tetsuro Watsuji is to make up for the limitation of Heidegger's individual “Dasein, ” and puts forward the mutual generation between Fūdo and collective “us” consciousness. However, how to consider the “Fūdo” itself has become a major dilemma in writing local history. Religious Sites: The Gods, Beliefs, and Space in the History of Shanghai, a book recently compiled by History Compilation Bureau of Greater Shanghai, provides an exploratory sample for the study of Shanghai local history. With painstaking textual research and from the perspective of interdisciplinary history, the book tells the evolution of local belief space in modern Shanghai as well as the footprints of famous figures such as Xu Guangqi, the ninth Panchen Lama and Zhao Puchu in Shanghai, and constructs the possibility of identity and emotional belonging in Shanghai.
