Abstract

This article introduces the theoretical frameworks and perspectives for studying international news, and how the international scholars analyze the important issues in international news reporting. It attempts to advance the level and quality of studies of international news through explication of theories and perspectives and discussion of the related literature, and therefore to encourage knowledge production through studying international news, which may provide theoretical foundation and practical guide for global strategic communication. This article introduces three theories and perspectives that could be applied to studying international news: 1) Theory of hierarchical influence on media content; 2) Framing theory; 3) Fairness and balance of news coverage. It also discusses the implication of these theoretical frameworks and perspectives in studying international news and understanding global communication.
