Abstract
Chen Zishan has long been devoted to the meticulous examination and verification of historical sources. The formation of problem awareness in his source-based research follows two main trajectories. First, conducting a textual investigation around unresolved historical questions. Second, initiating further documentary retrieval and historical analysis from concrete material evidence. His approaches to source-based writing can be broadly classified into two types: the “Recovery of Lost Texts” and “Historical Excavation”. The former focuses on the identification and analysis of scattered or lost writings and can be further divided into studies of authorship attribution and textual reconstruction; the latter seeks to reconstruct authentic historical contexts through the systematic sorting and excavation of historical events. Together, these approaches have shaped a distinctive writing paradigm that is guided by defined research questions, grounded in multi-source materials, and capable of transforming source criticism into interpretations of literary-historical issues and reconstructions of historical realities. This paradigm offers significant methodological value for scholarly reference.
