Abstract
The Chinese concept of shi(势), which means momentum or tendency, used to be a key philosophical concept in traditional Chinese scholarship. This paper studies three relatively unnoticed cases of modern reconstruction of the concept of shi in the three interrelated fields of philosophy, history, and literature. Drawing on the criticisms of the Western metaphysical tradition by Heidegger and Derrida, this paper aims to demonstrate how a part of modern Chinese philosophy has fallen under the strong influences of German Idealism and has thus been metaphysically transformed into a “a-historical” kind of philosophy.
