Abstract
Due to the outbreak of COVID-19 worldwide, face-to-face teaching in most affected countries and regions has been changed into the online mode. The strategic switch required teachers to learn and adapt quickly. This study aimed to identify major challenges and issues that foreign language teachers have experienced in latest pedagogical exigencies, through a small-scaled survey targeting at teachers of Chinese as a foreign language (TCFL). We distributed a questionnaire on the internet and via apps on mobile phones. Fifty-six TCFL teachers participated on a voluntary basis. Their feedbacks revealed mixed effects of virtual teaching on classroom interaction and student learning, and also most desirable functions for quality teaching and online assessments. We then discussed implications for teacher training and learner strategies, to maximize the benefits of using technology not as a contingency plan but a tool of honing modern TCFL pedagogy.
