Abstract
1950s were a complicated time. The British Government had to manage the relationship with the Chinese Government regarding who should have the legitimate governing power of Hong Kong. It also had to handle with care, the spread of communism in the Hong Kong education sector. This paper will review all the controlling measures that were taken in the private institutes of higher education by the Hong Kong Colonial Government, the rise and fall of the development of the private institutes and how the Colonial Government, the Kuomintang as well as the Communist Chinese Governments had played a role in shaping the cultural values and national identity of Hong Kong residents. There will be an in-depth analysis of the cultural sense of identity of the founders of the private institutes of higher education which will assist in acquiring a better understanding of how they wished to "Rebuild China" by establishing their education career. The findings will aid in understanding of the change of Hong Kong social culture, overall.
