Abstract
In traditional commentaries across successive dynasties, the passages “Wealth and Nobility” and “A Gentleman Abandons Benevolence” from the Liren chapter of the Analects have long been amalgamated into a single chapter, which has triggered misinterpretations of Confucius' thought. The Warring States bamboo manuscript Zhongni Yue (仲尼曰) preserved at Anhui University (the Andao slips) preserves a textual version closer to the primitive form of the Analects, proving that these two passages originally existed as separate chapters. Drawing on this newly unearthed manuscript, this paper revisits the chapter segmentation of the Liren (里仁) chapter and systematically analyzes interpretative biases of classical scholars including Kong Anguo, Huang Kan and Zhu Xi resulting from the long-standing combined-chapter arrangement, which gave rise to incoherent logic and confused thematic boundaries. On this basis, the two texts are reinterpreted to deepen scholarly understanding of the correlation between Confucius' views on wealth and moral cultivation.
