Abstract

When a deadly protein and its macroscopic effects began to parasite their way from East Asia to Europe and the rest of the world at the end of 2019, a new pandemic paradigm cast the global present under the hyper-mediated glare of an unfolding dystopia more than ever before. Now zoom into the specter of Hong Kong. Cue the spectacular skyline backdrops clouded by the fumes of the 2019 anti-Extradition Law Amendment Bill (anti-ELAB) protests. Follow the city’s continually jaw-dropping, concerted Orwellian transitions: Chief Executive Carrie Lam toasts her Beijing compatriots for a Hong Kong “back to the right track” as media outlets are either shut down or barred from reporting, civil society is disbanded, and most of the democratic camp sits in prison.
