Abstract

To test the deliberative consequences of online discussion, an experimental study was fielded with political tolerance, perspective taking, and argument repertoire as dependent variables, which are all expected to have positive input to the political process at the macro level. Both the heterogeneity of opinions and that of generations in discussion groups were manipulated to elucidate the democratic legitimacy of East Asian culture. Results indicate that generational heterogeneity suppresses active exchange and expression of ideas, suggesting the need to elaborate this unexplored factor.
