Abstract
St. Gury Karpov (1814-1882) is the first Russian Orthodox translator of the Chinese New Testament. The history of the Chinese orthodox translations completed by members of the Russian Orthodox mission in China (1715-1954) had been studied by A.N. Khokhlov, V.G. Dacyshen, Fr. Petr Ivanov, N.A. Samojlov and others. Nonetheless, information about the history of the Chinese New Testament translation is often segmental or scattered in different studies. This study attempts to reveal what was the background of the Chinese New Testament translation completed by St. Gury Karpov. The study is based on the information found in Karpov’s personal letters, works by members of the mission and contemporary authors.
