Visualize Beautiful Acoustics

This proposal is intended to organize a set of workshop sessions during the CityU Information Day 2014/15. The theme of the workshop is focused on a subject called cymatics – the study of sound visualization and vibration. Cymatics does not only unveil the hidden beauty of nature, it has also provided powerful tools for scientific research. Cymatics is a fascinating art-science topic to engage audience of all ages and backgrounds in observing and understanding the stunning patterns in nature. The proposed workshop will facilitate a number of experimental and installation art settings for participants to carry out cymatic effects and to invent new art forms. We believe that this hands-on and engaging learning experience will become a strong inspiration and motivation for all workshop participants. The aim of the workshop aligns with the goal of CityU’s Discovery-Enriched Curriculum (DEC), which is to give students the opportunity to make their own original discovery. This project will also facilitate interdisciplinary learning opportunity, and nurture next generation scientists and media artists.
