Description

In this project, an IDMA-OFDM transmission technique will be investigated for wireless communication systems. The target is to achieve high throughput applications, including both voice and data services. Both uplink and downlink will be studied. IDMA-OFDM is a hybrid form of interleave-division multiple-access (IDMA) and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) that combines the advantages of both. IDMA can be regarded as a special case of code-division multiple-access (CDMA). As such, the new IDMA-OFDM scheme inherits some distinguished advantages from the well-studied CDMA-OFDM scheme, such as simple treatment of the intersymbol interference (ISI) problem and mitigation of cross-cell interference. The focus will be on developing innovative techniques that can be applied to practical systems, but rigorous theoretical studies will be carried out as well in support of this. The outcomes of the project will be research reports, publications and demonstration hardware systems. Collaboration with industrial partners will be sought with a view to contributing to future wireless mobile communication systems.
